● Summary: BEFIT is a transformative national digital education initiative designed to combat "learning poverty" by integrating solar-powered tablet technology into daily classroom instruction. It represents Malawi's largest move toward digital literacy, ensuring that every child has a "digital teacher" to supplement their standard schooling.
● Goal: To dramatically improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills for learners in Standards 1 to 4, specifically addressing the statistic that only 13% of 7-year-olds in Malawi currently possess grade-level numeracy.
● Methodology: The program utilizes child-directed, adaptive learning delivered through Android tablets pre-loaded with "one course" software. A digital avatar named Alefa guides children through lessons in Chichewa. Because the software is adaptive, it identifies each child's current level and adjusts the difficulty of lessons accordingly.
● Target & Reach: Targeting approximately 3.8 million children across all 6,000 public primary schools. The government is currently leading a nationwide scale-up following a successful pilot phase.
● Infrastructure: Includes the installation of comprehensive solar power systems in every participating school, providing renewable energy that lasts over 20 years and can support community electrification.
● Active Partners: Government of Malawi, Imagine Worldwide, one billion, and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).
