Minister of Education, Science and Technology Hon. Bright Msaka SC has pledged Government’s support towards improving the learning environment at Blantyre Secondary School (BSS) to enable learners to access quality education.

Msaka made the commitment when he toured the school to appreciate its infrastructure and learning environment, where he noted some of the challenges affecting the institution, including unreliable electricity supply.

He said discussions with the school management had established the need for a backup power system, which they will support to ensure that learners continue with their studies during power interruptions.

Msaka also said there was a need to construct additional hostels to accommodate more students and address overcrowding at the school.

The Minister described BSS as one of the country’s premier schools, saying it had over the years produced students who had gone on to make significant contributions to the development of Malawi.

He encouraged learners to work hard and make good use of the opportunities available to them, saying the country was counting on them to provide leadership and contribute to building the Malawi of today and tomorrow.

The Headmaster of BSS Nickson Kaitano described the Minister’s visit as an important opportunity and a major motivation for both teachers and learners, saying the gesture demonstrated Government’s commitment to supporting the school.

He said the visit had encouraged the school community to continue working hard to maintain the institution’s standards and ensure that learners were provided with a conducive environment for learning.

The Headmaster added that the Minister’s commitment to addressing some of the challenges facing the school, particularly electricity and infrastructure, would motivate learners to work harder and make better use of the opportunities available to them.
