A total of 206 secondary school head teachers from the Central West Education Division (CWED) have undergone a two-day management and leadership training aimed at strengthening their capacity to effectively manage schools and improve teaching, learning and assessment.
The training was held from Thursday, 24 September to Friday, 25 September 2026, at Mbinzi Secondary School Hall in Lilongwe. It brought together officials from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, CWED officials and head teachers from across the division.
The training covered key areas of secondary school management, including the National Education Sector Investment Plan, analysis of the 2026 JCE and MSCE examination results, general school management, teacher and learner discipline, recruitment of support staff, implementation of the Free Secondary Education (FSE) guidelines, school systems and leadership, and updates from the Malawi Secondary School Headteachers’ Association (MASSHA).
Other areas covered included inclusive education, school sports, school health and nutrition, as well as quality assurance updates from the Directorate of Quality Assurance Services. The sessions were facilitated by officials from CWED.
Speaking during the first day of the training, the Guest of Honour, CWED Education Division Manager Sr. Veronica Massa, urged head teachers to uphold professionalism in the management of their schools.
Sr. Massa also commended CWED for its performance in the recently released 2026 MSCE examinations. CWED was ranked second among the six education divisions in the country, while Dedza and Lilongwe Rural West districts were among the top ten performing education districts nationally.
On the second day, the Guest of Honour, Director of Secondary Education Ruth Samati Kambali, led discussions on various aspects of secondary school management, with particular emphasis on the National Education Sector Plan.
Kambali commended CWED for organising the training and the head teachers for participating in the programme. She expressed hope that the knowledge and skills gained would be applied in schools to strengthen management and improve education outcomes.
The training also provided an opportunity for head teachers to engage directly with the Director of Secondary Education through an interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants sought clarification on various issues affecting secondary school management.
One of the participants, Alice Majankono, Head Teacher of Chinsapo Secondary School, Chinsapo Cluster Leader and Secretary General for CWED MASSHA, described the training as an eye-opener.
She said she would share the knowledge gained with colleagues and put it into practice to strengthen school management.
Meanwhile, CWED Sports Desk Officer Eric Kamwanje informed the participants that the division had emerged first nationally in Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) activities.
The achievement, he said, demonstrated the division’s performance not only in academic matters but also in school sports.
The two-day training provided head teachers with an opportunity to strengthen their management knowledge, share experiences and engage Ministry and division officials on issues affecting the effective management of secondary schools.
